In 1965, George and Charlotte Blonsky of New York City were granted US patent 3216423 for an “apparatus for facilitating the birth of a child by centrifugal force”. At the point of delivery, the mother would be strapped to the Blonskys’ special table and then spun at high speed until the baby flew out. A small net around the woman’s knees would catch the baby.

A mere 58 years later, we have a new contender for World’s Most Bonkers Invention, but this one didn’t stop at the patent stage. It has survived eight years of painstaking research and development, and you can now buy it in actual shops. Behold the Dyson Zone, a £750 pair of headphones with a detachable air-purifying visor.
